Self-Directed Study

At Marylebone University, it is possible for a student to compose their own degree syllabus using one or more methods:

  • Independent research (maximum 120 credits)*
  • Research within the University (maximum 120 credits)*
  • Thesis or dissertation (maximum 120 credits)
  • APEL evaluation (maximum 60 credits)
  • Credit transfer (maximum 60 credits)
  • Taught courses (minimum 120 credits at level 2+ including minimum 60 credits at level 3 for Undergraduate degrees)
Credits may be accumulated through the above, and by successfully completing courses offered by the University in one or more major subjects. This study may be cross-faculty and may be spread out over a period of up to eight years.

The number of credits required to earn a degree from the University may vary, however in all cases the following minima apply:
  • An Associate degree may be awarded to a student upon successful completion of 240 credits in total.
  • A Bachelor degree may be awared to a student upon successful completion of 360 credits in total.
  • A Masters degree may be awarded to a student upon successful completion of 180 credits POST-graduation (Bachelor).
  • A Doctoral degree may be awarded to a student upon successful completion of a minimum of 360 credits POST-graduation (Bachelor) or 180 credits POST-graduation (Master).


* A maximum of 120 credits may be earned by research per degree awarded, whether independent, University supported or a combination of both. Research submissions are subject to rigorous peer review. Credits awarded upon successful defence and Faculty assessment.
