Choosing a Course

Choosing your first course

Introduction

The majority of our students are working towards a qualification but, if you're not sure about what you want, you don't have to make decisions about qualifications when you first start. You can seek advice and guidance at any point during your studies.

Our courses are set at different levels according to their difficulty. Each level gives you the academic knowledge and skills - and the confidence - to move on to the next one. At Level 1 we offer:

  • Short courses (10-16 weeks) in a range of subjects that many students study for interest.
  • Longer courses that give a broad foundation for more specialist study at Levels 2 and 3. These usually take nine months to complete.

How much time you need

Our individual course descriptions (see prospectus) give you the start and finish dates. To give you some idea of the time you need, bear in mind that, regardless of level, it takes approximately 10 hours of study for each credit point. Some courses are intensive - for example 10 point, residential school courses. Some are less intensive - for example, studying 30 points over 9 months. Here are some examples of Level 1 courses:

Course Code Points Time needed
Understanding Society SS185 10 6-8 hours per week over 20 weeks
French (Beginners)
ML101F 10 2 weeks residential plus time for preparation and the end of course assessment
Data, Computing and Information IT150 30 8 hours per week over 9 months
Introduction to English Literature A103 60 16 hours per week over 9 months

Most students study part-time, do 60 points a year, and take six years to complete a Bachelor degree (360 points) or four years for an Associate degree. Certificates and diplomas with fewer points, take proportionately less time.

If you're new to undergraduate study

If you're new to study or haven't studied for a while, a 10 point, Level 1 course is a good place to start. It will introduce you to a subject area and help you to develop essential study skills. They take up to 20 weeks and they're fascinating courses in their own right, even if you don't want to take your studies further. If you continue studying, you'll be well prepared for a longer Level 1 course.

If you've studied at undergraduate level before

  • If you're studying a subject that's new to you, starting at Level 1 will give you an introduction to our method of supported open learning as well as your chosen subject.
  • If you already have a degree and you're confident that you have the necessary background knowledge and skills, look at our postgraduate courses.
  • If you have relevant work experience in your chosen subject, it may be appropriate to start above Level 1 or at postgraduate level. If you're not sure, contact us for advice.
  • You may be able to count your previous study towards a Marylebone qualification
